Patrick the Llama Comes to Culture Night Galway 2026: A Journey from Peru to Ireland

This Culture Night Galway, a very special visitor from Peru has a story to tell. 🦙🇵🇪🇮🇪

If you have visited Happy Llama at a TinyTraders Village market and Galway market, you may already know Patrick.

He has met families, visitors and people from all over the world. He has appeared in countless photographs, travelled around Ireland and slowly become one of the most recognisable members of the Happy Llama family.

But behind Patrick is a much bigger story.

On 18 September 2026, Patrick the Llama will be part of Culture Night Galway, inviting visitors to discover Peru, alpaca fibre and the cultural connection that has grown between Peru and Ireland through Happy Llama.

From the Andes of Peru to Galway

Patrick's story begins thousands of kilometres away, in Peru.

For generations, alpacas and their fibre have been an important part of life, craftsmanship and tradition in the Andes. Today, those traditions continue through the work of Peruvian makers and artisans.

Happy Llama was created to bring a little piece of that story to Ireland.

What began with handmade Peruvian products has gradually become something more: a way of sharing where we come from, introducing people to Peruvian culture and creating new connections here in Galway.

And Patrick has become the perfect little ambassador for that journey.

Meet Patrick the Llama at Culture Night Galway

For Culture Night 2026, visitors will be able to step into Patrick's world and follow his journey from Peru to Ireland.

Rather than a traditional exhibition, we wanted to create an experience that families could explore, touch, discuss and enjoy together.

Visitors will discover Patrick's journey through an interactive display featuring his adventures around Ireland, while learning about Peru, alpacas and the story behind alpaca fibre.

There will also be a creative activity inspired by Peruvian colour and craft, opportunities to meet and take a photograph with Patrick, and a Peru–Ireland Connection Wall, where visitors can leave their own message and become part of Patrick's story.

It is designed to be a short, welcoming cultural experience that children, adults, families and curious visitors can enjoy at their own pace.

Why Patrick?

Patrick has spent a lot of time meeting people.

At markets and events, we have watched children run towards him, tourists stop for photographs and adults smile when they discover him for the first time.

That gave us an idea.

What if Patrick could do more than make people smile?

What if this little llama could help tell people about the country he represents?

Patrick is now becoming a storytelling character for Happy Llama — a little Peruvian llama living in Ireland who introduces people to the landscapes, traditions, colours, stories and craftsmanship of Peru.

Culture Night Galway is a very special chapter in that journey.

A Little Piece of Peru in Galway

For us, participating in Culture Night is about more than displaying a product.

It is about cultural connection.

Happy Llama was born from Peru, but it has grown in Ireland. Galway is now part of our story too.

Through Patrick, we hope visitors leave knowing something new about Peru — perhaps something about alpacas, the Andes or Peruvian craftsmanship — but also feeling that culture can be shared in simple ways: through stories, creativity, curiosity and meeting someone from somewhere different.

Sometimes all it takes to start that conversation is a llama. 🦙
