Meet Patrick the Llama: A Peruvian Story in Galway for St Patrick’s Day ☘️🦙

Every year, the streets of Galway come alive for St Patrick’s Day, one of the most joyful celebrations in Ireland.

This year, a small piece of Peruvian culture will also be part of the celebration.

My name is Sofía Fadden, a Peruvian entrepreneur living in Galway and the founder of Happy Llama, a small brand inspired by the colourful traditions of the Andes.

Through Happy Llama, I bring handmade alpaca creations and joyful Andean stories from Peru to Ireland.

And this year, one special llama has an Irish name.

The Story of Patrick the Llama

Originally, the idea was to bring a large llama from Peru for the parade.

But as often happens with creative projects, things don’t always go exactly as planned.

When it seemed the big surprise might not arrive on time, a new idea appeared — and sometimes the best ideas come from unexpected moments.

That’s how Patrick the Llama was born.

A playful Peruvian-Irish llama, ready to join the Galway St Patrick’s Day Parade and share a little Andean joy with the city.

Why a Llama?

Llamas are one of the most iconic animals of the Andes in Peru.

For centuries they have been part of daily life, culture and traditions in the mountains.

Bringing a llama to the streets of Galway is a fun and colourful way to celebrate the connection between Peru and Ireland.

It’s also a reminder that even small communities can share their culture and stories.

From Peru to Galway

Happy Llama was created to bring handmade alpaca gifts and colourful Andean inspiration to Ireland.

Each piece is inspired by the warmth, creativity and traditions of Peru.

Today our llamas travel from the Andes to Galway, carrying stories of migration, culture and creativity.

And now one of them proudly carries an Irish name:
