Things I’ve Learned After Doing Markets in Ireland

If you’re thinking about doing markets in Ireland, this post is for you.

After doing multiple Irish markets as a small business owner, I’ve learned that markets are about much more than selling products.

They are about people, connection and learning as you go. Here are the most important lessons I’ve learned... so you don’t have to learn the hard way.

 1. People don’t come to markets just to buy

One of the biggest surprises when selling at markets in Ireland is realizing that most people don’t arrive ready to purchase. They come to: Talk Touch products Ask questions Connect with the person behind the brand Sales happen after trust. A friendly conversation matters more than a sales pitch at Irish markets.

 2. Let people touch your product (especially in winter)

This is essential in Ireland, particularly during colder months.

Softness, texture and warmth make a real difference.
When people can physically experience your product, they remember it.

Many customers don’t buy straight away, but they come back later because they remember how it felt.

 3. Clear prices make people feel relaxed Clear, visible pricing changes everything.

Clear, visible pricing changes everything.

When prices are easy to see:

Customers feel comfortable

Browsing feels natural

There’s no awkward pressure

Irish customers value transparency.

Clear prices invite people to stay longer and engage more freely.

 4. The Irish weather will test you

Outdoor markets in Ireland are unpredictable. Rain, wind and cold mornings are part of the experience. Layers, patience and a sense of humour are essential.

Markets teach resilience quickly, and they teach you how to keep showing up even when conditions aren’t perfect.

5. Your market stall should tell a story

People stop when they feel there’s a story behind the table.

Not just products, but a person.

 When your stall communicates:

  • Who you are
  •  Why you do what you do
  •  What makes your brand different

People connect. And connection is what turns visitors into returning customers.

 Confidence comes after you start

One of the most important lessons markets have taught me:  Confidence doesn’t come before you start.

It comes after you show up.

Every market teaches you something, even the hard ones.
